Three Colours: Red (1994)

Just like the first time I saw it, Red is the most difficult for me to fully comprehend and connect with, but Kieslowski’s directing and Irene Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant are enticing to look at, making it still a very unique film experience. Since last time, I have explored a great deal of the rest of Kieslowski’s filmography and Red is a fitting finale for his career as it combines many of his signature elements. He has explored the meaning of coincidence, destiny and societal norms several times, which seems to be the core here. The film is littered with small almost encounters and seemingly minor coincidental events that all come together in the end, while still keeping a sense of that our destinies aren’t predetermined, they just happen.
