I ♥ Huckabees (2004)
I fell in and out of this movie several times. I found the general absurd premise of existential detectives interesting and it is off to a good start. The movie constantly toys with how it approaches its rather aloof philosophical subject matter, where it is both being serious and outright mocking everything. I was thinking that it was also in some way ridiculing and satirizing those kind of movie watchers that love to pick apart the themes and discuss the deeper philosophical ramifications of each character arc. It seems like a movie you could have great fun analyzing, but maybe half way in you will find the movie laughing right back at you for doing so.
Given its premise it is like completely intentional that the movie is so incoherent, unfocused and messy. Sometimes it kinda works, but I gradually lost interest. The very early 00s aesthetics and vibe also haven’t aged that well, though it does have little kitsch like charm. Not even Huppert did anything remotely interesting here. I don’t think she is that good in English speaking roles.
