Barton Fink (1991)
So what I really liked about this is the remarkably well written and fantastically played characters. Everyone has great screen presence, full of character and personality - even though some are caricatures of an archetype. I was pleasantly surprised to see John Mahoney. I was however also waiting for the movie to get going, as it seemed to be treading water on the writers block theme. And then it went completely haywire and surreal. It is easy to see the commentary on the phoniness of Hollywood and how “artists” see themselves, and unsurprisingly that was popular in Cannes. But for me it didn’t do a whole lot more than that.
