Full Metal Jacket (1987)
It is interesting to compare this to Kubrick’s Paths of Glory as this doesn’t carry a direct anti-war message on its sleeve. We are simply allowed to see the brainwashing and abuse with where it ultimately leads to with removal of empathy. Let the viewer think for themselves, as Kubrick usually does.
I am amazed at how many quotes I have seen and heard in all kinds of places that come from this movie. Its influence reaches far. I also enjoyed the choice of music. It sets the tone perfectly.
But beyond all the high quality film making where there is nothing to fault, it didn’t quite get under my skin as other Kubrick films do. I am not even that well versed in Vietnam-movies, but this didn’t add a whole lot of new to that topic. The depiction of the so-called “war journalism” had potential and I wish it was utilized a bit more.
