The Swindle (1997)
Another Chabrol/Huppert collaboration and definitely on the lighter side of things compared to La Ceremonie and Story of Women. The upside is that we get to see Huppert smile way more than usual!
In the beginning of the film, I really liked the setup of this couple doing small time scam artists jobs on innocent men with money. They stumble upon a possibility where it is millions instead of thousands, and they find themselves in the deep end. All slightly amusing in the way that may make you smile, but not laugh. It is a very “mid” film that starts off okay, but slowly becomes less engaging despite the stakes getting higher. Huppert and Serrault are both wonderful, and those two are the main reason one could maybe watch this.
