$10,000 for a Massacre (1967)
This dives into the similarities and boundaries between bounty killers and regular bandits. Both kill for money, the bounty hunter may claim he only kills bad guys wanted by the law, but is that just an excuse they tell themselves? The “hero” of the story is called Django (yet another piggyback on Corbucci’s success film) and he joins forces with banditleader Manuel simply because he offers more money. Not surprisingly things go haywire, and Django is forced to face the consequences of his stretched moral codex in pursuit of money. It is an interesting setup and there is an attempt to give both the hero and the bandits a bit more character depth, but I don’t Gianni Garko as Django fully succeeds. He is very plain and flat. Claudio Camaso brings more color and motivation to Manuel. The movie is proper gritty, windy and dusty with a decent soundtrack that sometimes is a tad too heavily inspired by Morricone.
