The Last Picture Show (1971)

I didn’t expect to like a film about insecure teenagers so much. Everything feels very natural and believable, even though the basic plot line is little more than everyone wanting to screw each other. It is miles above modern depictions of teenage sexuality. The innocence of being young and full of life set in this desolate town that is falling about, gives the whole film an unique atmosphere where the young peoples thirst for life is contrasted with their rather bleak surroundings. Minor criticism is that I was sometime lost in its sense of time. It was often hard to determine whether a day or a month had passed between scenes. What elevates this to a classic is all the great performances by everyone in the cast.
