The Vast of Night (2019)
One of those instances where I can appreciate the attempt more than the result. I’ll happily eat up basically anything about signals from outer space and the radio signal aspect of this story was intriguing at first. The filmmakers had to get creative with their limited resources and there are moments here where it resembles a decent X-Files episode, but since it is almost made entirely of “telling” with little “showing”, it never gets off ground and the mystery remain interesting in theory but not in practice. Clearly heavily inspired by Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which is an impossible bar to reach, but I would still give some praise for effort despite it not really working out.
