Memories of Murder (2003)
Been a while since I have seen a good murder mystery and this Korean take on the genre was a welcoming original approach. The case itself is brutal enough to keep the general case solving plot interesting, but it is of course not the result but the process that is important here. The odd mix of humor and brutality works without losing the seriousness of the murders. I got a clear sense of the detective’s desperation to solve the case and how their misguided approaches ends up hindering the goal, is perfectly portrayed. Their actions are abhorrent in every way, but it is possible to understand what drives them.
