The Seventh Seal (1957)
I think I prefer Bergman when it is a bit more grounded like in Autumn Sonata or Scenes from a Marriage. I knew from the get go that this would be a challenge for me, as I can’t find much interest in film that relies heavily on religious symbolism. While The Seventh Seal has that in spades, it is not a religious film as such. At least it has plenty of atheistic interpretations open to it. And how it deals with mans fear of death through different very powerful individual scenes, was something I could respond to. But as a whole, it didn’t really come together quite for me in the end. Strong individual scenes and with a very beautiful Bergmanesque cinematography.
