The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Took a chance with a to me completely unknown Disney animation film with my two daughters aged 5 and 7. The youngest dropped out after 20 minutes, but did have fun dancing to some of the songs. Which is fair, as I think the proper audience for this is a bit older. Both myself and the oldest kid did however think the story was more convoluted than it needed. Tiana’s story is good and interesting with her ambitions for owning a restaurant and once she gets turned into a frog, the journey needed for the story gets going. While some more is needed to add meat to that story, the whole voodoo thing and the villains plan had too many poorly developed elements and motivations. I think good Disney villians have more well thought out and deeper motivation than simply wanting power and money. Dr. Facilier just isn’t that memorable. Tiana and Naveen are great likeable main characters, but the various sidekicks were both too many and not unique enough to really make a mark. Some individual funny moments and scenes, but quickly forgotten and very far from the best of funny sidekicks in older animation movies.
