Vagabond (1985)
Varga again got me into confusing and uncertain thoughts about my own prejudices and understanding of social norms, though with a little less impact than in Le Bonheur. How the drifter Mona is portrayed here doesn’t exactly invoke empathy at first, and I think Varga want’s me to question why that is. We don’t get a back story or much character development from her. We just see here going from place to place, never being able to stay anywhere for very long. Sometimes due to circumstances beyond her control and other times simply because she pushes away the people trying to help her. A challenging film that is meant to provoke without giving answers.
