The Homesman (2014)
An unconventional powerful western that shows the hardships of living as a settler in the frontier in a way I haven’t seen before. Plenty of westerns show that living in the early settlements wasn’t exactly easy living, but often they would depict how perseverance prevailed and how the American dream wins in the end. Or that the hardship mostly came down to bandits or Indians. In The Homesman we see the opposite with how prairie madness utterly breaks and destroys people beyond recovery. While it isn’t all doom and gloom in the end, it is definitely a tough film without much hope. Similar to Brimstone.
