Five Fingers for Marseilles (2017)
I watched this because I found the concept of a South African western interesting. In many ways it is very much like a gritty western in style and atmosphere, just set in a modern setting in a small South African town. That in itself is cool and maybe enough to justify making it, as the imagery is generally well done and its homages to western tropes are respectfully done. However, I feel like I am missing something. Having the story set in such a setting should open for elements that couldn’t be told in the traditional western setting. I might very well be culturally or historically blind to see it, but I didn’t get much more than pastiche out of this. Some shots do look nice, but the use of overly dramatic music like taken out of movies such as Inception or Arrival seem out of place here and the various fight scenes aren’t particularly well made.
