Alps (2011)

Wrapping up the majority of Lanthimos’ filmography for now with the movie that is closest to Dogtooth, which I ought to appreciate since I have been comparing his other movies to Dogtooth in my reviews. Again he makes a portrait of a strange group of people trying to conform to society by literally living somebody else’s lives. In usual fashion the acting is deadpan, lifeless and without emotions, giving it a feel of absurd theater played by people that don’t really understand the meaning of what they are doing. I like how Lanthimos doesn’t puncture the concept halfway through, but keeps the weirdness going from start to finish without much resolution to anything. But it is also less weird and absurd than Dogtooth, so it is only half as interesting and the movie as a whole is less focused and a bit messy. I enjoyed the style again, but it didn’t give me a mystery that I feel compelled to ponder much further over.
