The Favourite (2018)

Period pieces about royalty and aristocracy aren’t really my thing, but Lanthimos turns everything sideways here while still keeping within the usual elements of those sort of movies. There is probably a point to that, as it seems more like a commentary or mocking of the attempted seriousness and accuracy of other period pieces. On the surface, they way Queen Anne and this time in English history is depicted here looks pretty ridiculous, do we really know if this might not in fact be closer to the truth?

For a Lanthimos movie, the story here is pretty normal and straightforward, which may explain why I wasn’t so taken with this. It does things differently and all the oddities are funny and refreshingly strange, but I think I prefer when Lanthimos is also writing the script.
