Forever (2022)
René Frelle Petersen has done it again. A story filled with love and compassion for its characters and the setting. I have seen many compared Frelle to Yasujirō Ozu and this movie also reminded me a bit of Tokyo Story with how it deals with a family and how they each deal with grief differently. What makes this work for me is that the naturalistic acting style feels more true to life than most other so called “social realism” movies in Denmark. It is not overly dramatic or with situations that feels written for a movie setting, but rather something that is 100% a true depiction of regular peoples lives. Uncle was more subdued and restrained with its characters and their emotions, whereas Forever the narrative is clearer and they actually talk about their feelings. That approach made the impact slightly less for me personally, but I still got a little lump in my throat.
