Heavy Trip (2018)

The trailer and title gave the impression that this would be sort of a road movie, but that is basically only the very end, as most of the movie is one long buildup to the actual trip. It took me a while to get into this movie’s particular humor, which is a very exaggerated level of ridiculousness and general dumbness. The jokes are very hit and miss, but when it hits the satirical side of things with some great stabs at metal culture, it is genuinely funny. It manages to make fun of metal people, but without ridicule as everything is shown with a passion for the music and the right to be allowed to be yourself. With the corpsepaint and it being from Finland I expected the actual musical choice to be more on the black metal side of things, so in some ways it feels “wrong” that they play a specific style of gore death metal. But I am sure that is a quite intentional choice to piss of metalheads, as we love to nitpick these things. If one can accept the incredible levels of silliness this movie embodies, most people would be in for a fun 90 minutes - especially if you are into metal.
