The Lobster (2015)

Lanthimos certainly delivers once again in the crazy concepts department. I like the closed-off world with its odd rules and culture that stems from it. When it is funny, it is really laugh out loud hilarious. But it also doesn’t have that much more to offer than its concept. Once that is figured out, I felt like the movie just went through the motions and didn’t come with many surprises as there weren’t much mystery left. Unlike Dogtooth that was strange and intriguingly incomprehensible from start to finish, this didn’t give me much after the first half hour or so. While there are some obvious allegories and satirical stabbings at modern relationships and our expectations to them, I don’t think it reaches any novel insight here. Lanthimos’ style of film is still strange and intriguing enough that I want see more of what he has to offer.
