Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea (2023)

I had high hopes for this as it came with good recommendations, but it was a huge disappointment. Black Mirror has become a parody of itself. What irked me here is that the setting makes little logical sense. I know Black Mirror has always focused on a concept and then just went with it, rather than complete world building, but this felt very artificial constructed to force its premise to work and not a future or world you could at least imagine being plausible. From a storytelling viewpoint, we also get way too little information on what is actually at stake here. The space mission makes little sense and the characters are blank and unsympathetic, so there is no impact for all the tragic things that happen. The shock value is gone when you don’t care at all. Maybe Black Mirror has always been like that and I was just more impressed with the first season as it was new and groundbreaking at the time, but this is simply plain boring. And while it didn’t end exactly as I thought it would, it was still pointless and left me with nothing but a “whatever”.
