Whisper of the Heart (1995)

While Only Yesterday explored adulthood and looking back at ones childhood, this is a more of a coming-of-age type story with a girl in the weird age between childhood and early adulthood with all the doubts about who you are and what you want to do with you future takes up a lot of space in most peoples mind.

I really liked the novelty aspect of her using library loan cards to find the other person who has loaned the same books as her. I don’t think my own library growing up had names on those cards, but I do remember that there was something compelling about seeing previous loans on the books you brought home.

This movie is as lovely animated and beautifully told as most other Ghibili productions, but from a personal perspective and being the age I have, I didn’t get a whole lot out of this. Only Yesterday spoke more directly to me, but I appreciate this exists.
