Things to Come (2016)
Isabelle Huppert has to endure a lot of hardships. Here she has to deal with rebellious students, an aging mother that has lost the will to live, a divorce and an academic career slowly declining. However compared to what Haneke usually puts her through, this must be heaven.
All kidding aside, this film is a portrayal of a woman who finds herself in a small tornado of things going sideways where she deals with it seemingly without missing a step. At least at first, because while she is constantly doing something without pause, it becomes clear she forgets herself in the process and doesn’t get a moment to connect with her own feelings. What I found interesting is how despite the things happening on screen are mostly tragic, it is still a film filled with hope and a positive look on life. Huppert plays her usual restrained self that doesn’t exactly carry her emotions on the outside, but her state of mind still comes strikingly clearly through. She finds happiness by being thrown through this tumbledryer of events.
