Happy End (2017)

A Haneke film called Happy End is really an oxymoron and of course there isn’t exactly a happy end for anyone here. We have a mother being poisoned by her daughter, a worker getting killed in an accident, an old patriarch looking for assisted suicide and a teenager trying to commit suicide. Just a normal Haneke film.

I think this needs a bit more time to settle properly for me, because it is in a weird way a very “normal” Haneke film that has all the elements, but it doesn’t cut as deep as the other. It covers similar themes as Amour, only less focused. So while this wasn’t an immediate gut punch like many of his other films, this still had the usual effect on me with a mix of curiosity, resentment and inappropriate laughter.
