Triangle of Sadness (2022)
This manages somehow to be both less subtle and more subtle than Don’t Look Up. It shamelessly goes all in on its message, with characters 1:1 talking directly about politics as it doesn’t need to build everything around a metaphor. But the story isn’t formed on a narrative copy of climate disaster, though it is in a way exactly that.
I found this way funnier than Don’t Look Up. It doesn’t rely on jokes but ridiculous scenes that goes on for an uncomfortable long time. Woody Harrelson and Zlatko Burić steals the show when they are on screen. I am just not seeing this as a Cannes winner in any way. It doesn’t evoke much more than laughs on the whole situation, has a feel of “preaching to the converted” and it deflates itself in the last act. Everything on the cruise is top notch and a trimmed down version of the movie skipping most of the start and the last act would perhaps have worked better.
