Sophie's Choice (1982)

Despite the heavy subject matter, this didn’t really move most of the time. The actual “choice” scene is pretty powerful on its own and I thought the scenes in Auschwitz generally worked the best. Streep is better as a prisoner than as a survivor, which is a problem when most of the movie takes place after. The whole love triangle drama is not that compelling and while it should work on paper connecting Sophie’s horrible past with her present struggles, it felt like disconnected narratives for me. I was not super impressed with Meryl Streep’s performance here, and I think she has done better in for example The Bridges of Madison County or Adaptation.. Reluctant 3 stars for the segments in Auschwitz.
