Inside Out (2015)

Not seen this since release and now with my own kids it is a new thoughtful experience. They liked it, but seemingly mostly as a colorful entertaining story. Not really sure the abstract layers of depicting emotions got to them, but a good foundation for watching it more times in the next couple of years.

As for the movie, I think it is incredibly bold and admirable of Pixar to tackle such are complex subject. And with one of the best musical themes ever. Their ambitions are certainly high and they mostly succeed. The abstraction of emotions and the general message that you need to be sad to also be happy is overly simplified, but it sticks the landing by not promising too much. The ride is entertaining as it goes, but I do think they sacrifice some of their concepts in order to just have stuff happening for Joy and Sadness on their journey. It is a bit too random events that doesn’t have quite the same strong connection to the human psyche as some of the other elements.

Not seen it with the original English voice acting yet, but I will get around to it at some point. For the Danish voice cast, I think Lisbeth Wulff as Sadness is the true standout. The rest are serviceable but mostly forgettable.
