Bleeder (1999)

There is a lot of anger issues at play here in this gritty and violent drama set in late 90s Copenhagen. Similar in style to Pusher but with a looser narrative and all the violence doesn’t have any humorous tones here. I really digged the style and the loose narrative, but I was still left mostly puzzled on what Refn wanted to convey here. Certainly something about anxiety and anger issues with Bodnia’s character, which also raises my issue with Kim Bodnia as an actor. He seems to play most of his roles the same way, even though they are written differently. I don’t think he manages to properly convey much of Leo’s vulnerable emotional sides here. Compared to Mads Mikkelsen where this was only his third major feature film role and already shows a lot more range.
