May December (2023)

I am surprised I haven’t seen this premise used before, because it is a great idea to create a character study with an actress who is doing character research for a biopic. It is an intriguing concept and I like how this was used to form an understanding of Gracie through people around. In the end, her husband Joe ended up being the most interesting and truly tragic story of this film.

However, I am also very confused. I have absolutely no idea why this is labeled as half comedy. It was fairly melodramatic to me, to such an extent that it felt intentional to give that campy vibe. In parts it reminded me of Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct. The film also has some odd choices and tonal shifts, with most of being pretty straight towards (bordering on boringly told), with some odd interruptions of ominous piano music - which even weirder reminded me of X-Files. I can’t quite wrap my head around what Haynes’ intent here is. At times it felt like the script made too convenient plot points for its own good.

Ultimately, I really liked the premise and concept behind this, Melton gives a great performance as Joe with the most interesting character arc and I sort of like how the film also confused me so much. I like films that explores the theme of what defines a person, but Anatomy of a Fall did it better in 2023.
