Memoria (2021)

I think this movie really is best experienced in a theater setting, where you are demanded the utmost focus and immersive sound. The very slow meditative pace is hard to get at home. Because without that meditative state as I can see many other praising reviews mention, it is hard to connect with this film and I failed getting much out of it. Too opaque, strange and with little guidance from the director. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t many individual aspects of it I can appreciate and see quality in. Tilda Swinton being one highlight with her almost shy and restrained approach to her character. The sound design is unique and interesting, and the many very long takes grabs the attention like a Bela Tarr film also does. But unlike Tarr, this didn’t grab me in the same way. Many individual scenes were worthwhile and interesting to watch, but it didn’t create a cohesive film for me.
