It Follows (2014)

While I think this isn’t entirely successful as a classic horror, even though it mimics the 80s style simple concept horror plot quite well, it has many other interesting elements that traditional teen horror movies lacks. It has the feel and astehics of an arthouse movie and it makes some well needed minor changes to the usual formula.

I like how everyone approaches this scary phenomenon with a reasonably methodical and intelligent approach. They are not dumb teenagers and everyone is friendly and supportive. I also appreciate how the movie respects the viewer and doesn’t go overboard in exposition. We are allowed to fill in the blanks ourselves, and letting our own imaginations create the unsettling emotions.

The world this takes places is both realistic and like a closed bubble with no adults. There are plenty of times where you expect the outside and more adult world to intervene in what is happening, but it doesn’t happen. Usually such things would bother me, but it doesn’t here. It somehow feels perfect for this movie to have this group of young people inside their own odd microcosm.
