Shoplifters (2018)

Not previously familiar with Kore-eda but he seems to have an impressive skill in getting actors, especially such young children, to create very personal and authentic characters. Everything feels very lived in, from their little home with all their stuff to their daily routines. There structure and plot is very loose and doesn’t need to follow strict dramatic curves to become engaging.

I love how there is no judgement on these people and their actions, and it isn’t trying to manipulate a specific sympathy either. We see their lives as it is is and through their interactions get to explore complex themes of the meanings of family, compassion and upbringing. The weird blend of lies and truth as foundations for cohesion in families.
