Akira (1988)

This movie is a audiovisual sensory bombardment with a dense high concept plot on top. Very impressive but also quite daunting. The animation is superb, and I especially appreciated how there was equal care done to both the detailed beautiful backgrounds creating this futuristic world and the fully fledged animated characters. Too often I find animated films have a big discrepancy between background and moving characters. Here everything looks equally part of the world.

I know absolute nothing of Akira or manga in general, so I admit I was somewhat lost in the dense story. It is easy to simply to get lost in the spectacle alone and just let the colorful chaos and destruction flow over you. It was also a bit too much after a while, because this movie is just full speed ahead for two hours.
