Superman (1978)
I am guessing it is close to 30 years since I last saw this and I could mostly recall the exciting stuff at the end. This movie sure does takes its time to get going, but I actually enjoyed the rather slow exposition and mellow tender moments of his upbringing. The scenes at Krypton are quite well made with a convincing “otherworldy” atmosphere.
I watched Lois & Clark on TV as a kid and I also enjoyed the chemistry between them here, though I wish we could get more of Clark - but of course, the movie is Superman after all.
Lex Luthor is brilliantly evil in the ridiculous comicbook way, as he is supposed to. His plan is the perfect kind of nuts.
Donner’s version of Superman is heartwarming and positive, in a charming and almost carefree way. It never gets really dangerous, as this is very far from the present day overly gritty superhero adaptions. In many ways I prefer this approach, but this movie still has some jarring pacing issues and some rather dated humor that dampened the experience a bit.
