X (2022)
I don’t think this succeeds at much of what it is trying to do. The beginning is clearly a homage to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a group of young (somewhat horny) people in a van in the 70s in sunny Texas. Good start and the general exploitation vibe with old school porn isn’t a bad concept. Sadly, I found the whole execution tame and boring. It looks rather bland and don’t create anything like a 70s vibe. Would have been cool if they shot on a grainy 16mm camera to set the atmosphere. In addition, the old couple is far from convincing and not remotely scary. It is way too obvious it is younger actors with a ton of makeup. Maybe it could redeem itself with some interesting kills, but I found most of them to be rather unimaginative and pretty standard. I will give Pearl a chance though and it also appears to have slightly better reviews.
