Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)
This is a great way to do a sequel. It changes some things so it is not too similar while keeping what made the first movie special. This relies a bit more on comedic elements, but I wouldn’t call it an action comedy. The stakes are still pretty serious, the villains are ruthless and people do get hurt.
The plot and characterization of the villains are quite basic, and is really just there as a simple vehicle to throw Riggs and Roger into crazy fun action sequences. That was fine at first, but I did think the plot was too underdeveloped in the end making the last part of the film less interesting that it might have been. Of course it Gibson and Glover that make this series what it is. Gibson as the almost maniac with nothing to lose is a great contrast to Glover’s regular family-man cop.
