How to Have Sex (2023)

In sex ed class, something like 25 years ago, we saw a short film about two young girls setting out to loose their virginity in the night life. One of them ends up in a situation they come to regret. I expected this movie to be sort of an updated version of that, and it more or less is. Which is on one account a good thing, because it is important for such issues to be shown on film for the proper generation, but also pretty worrying that so little, when it comes to sex and youth culture, has changed for the better.

As for this movie, the lead actress Mia McKenna-Bruce is who make the impact here. She conveys every conflicted emotion with body language and expression that is felt in the viewer. Her character is naturally convincing. The movie focuses a lot on seeing and understanding non verbal cues, where we as the viewer can easily see what is going on, while barely anyone on screen seems to be able to do that. This forces us to think whether we have the same blindspots or fear of speaking up in similar situations.

I am clearly way out of the intended audience for this movie, but I appreciate its existence because it gives an insight into a world of which I know absolutely nothing and from what I can gather from other reviews, it does seem to be a realistic portrayal.
