Rosetta (1999)
This is a very personal and tragic character study empathized with a camerawork that is literally up close and personal in the face of Émilie Dequenne practically the entire runtime. It makes for an unsettling experience when it is impossible to not be inflicted by the frustration, anger, resentment, perseverance and general feeling of unfairness that reeks of Rosetta. Since I have lived a pretty privileged life, this is probably the closest I would get to understand the feeling of being poor and it is horrible. Rosetta doesn’t demand much in life. Just a normal self sufficient life, and nothing says she doesn’t deserve that, but it remains forever so far out of reach due to unlucky circumstances. It isn’t always easy to understand her actions, but people are not rational all the time. A worthy Palme d’Or winner.
