Pi (1998)
I am not really sure whether I like this based on the films own merits or from all the other great things it reminds me of. It has an aesthetics similar to Computer Chess, the concept of finding a deeper meaning within pi is also a central element of one of the best science fiction novels, Contact by Carl Sagan, and the themes of using mathematics to explore philosophical questions is reminiscent of one of my favorite science fiction writers Greg Egan.
Aronofsky creates a very effective and intense thriller that both feels quite small and claustrophobic, but also explores pretty far reaching big ideas and concepts. The film lost me a bit towards the end though, but otherwise a very gripping and unique piece of film.
