The Eight Mountains (2022)
A lovely picturesque movie about a lifelong friendship and a love for an Italian mountain. It is sort of hard to explain what makes this an enjoyable watch, as it has a rather mundane sounding story about two boys who becomes friends during the summer in a mountainous village, then to meet again years later to build a primitive stone house high up on the mountain. It explores several themes of friendship, heritage, conflict between modern civilization and traditional simple living, mans relationship with nature, father and son relationship - all set in beautiful landscapes. Shot in 4:3 which made me think of Godland which it shares more than a few similarities with. The narrow picture makes for an interesting contrast to the wide open landscapes which usually calls for big widescreen, but it makes the focus more personal. Both feel good and tragic, and simply just a breathtaking reflective picturesque film.
