A Separation (2011)
There are plenty of movies depiction all kinds of horrors, but few things hits as hard as that of alzheimers. Unlike in The Father this doesn’t deal with that directly, but how it affects the people around the illness. It can strain otherwise good people close to their breaking point. Add to the mix another element of financial difficulties and religious complexities, and this ended up being one of the best films I have seen since Anatomy of a Fall - which it also shares some resemblance with.
There is so much profound authenticity from everyone here, which I rarely see at that level. What we see aren’t bad people. Just regular people trying to protect their loved ones pushed to the limits by very unfortunate circumstances outside their control. There is sympathy for everyone and sadly everyone also loses. Not shy of calling this a masterpiece.
