Elizabeth (1998)
At first I found the narrative to be unstructured and it wasn’t easy to keep track of all the factions and political conflicts. However once I accepted that this wasn’t going to be a history lesson and the focus instead was on Elizabeth and how she grows confident and starts believing in her own judgment rather than her council, I appreciated more what Shekhar Kapur’s intention is with this movie. Cate Blanchett is the main event here and the rest of the cast is mostly there for her to develop or react in some fashion.
While I do like the general feminist message Elizabeth’s story is framed around, the overall narrative is a bit clumsy in parts and uneven, and never reaching deeper insights into her thoughts or character.
