Corn Island (2014)

Slow and minimalist story with beautiful cinematography. A man and his granddaughter are building a small wooden shed and planting corn on a small island in a river. Barely a word spoken as we see their methodical work. Only complicated by the fact there is a war going on and soldiers and shootings pass close by. They try to stay uninvolved but if course that isn’t really an option. It is very similar to Tangerines which I think deals with the same war. While there is something pristine and serene about the very minimalist nature of the story and their interactions with nature, as a whole this movie didn’t have quite as much to offer as Tangerines.
