Last Night in Soho (2021)

I really wanted to like this more than I did. It had plenty of potential, a great concept, beautiful cinematography and a style clearly inspired by Suspiria. It starts off well enough with lovely but shy Eloise trying to handle moving to the big city. The duality of the present and the 60s works great showing the contrast and similarities, along with Eloise discovering the darker sides of the time period she adores. Initially I was also okay with her visions and ghosts chasing her, but it started to repeat itself and took too much time to lead anywhere. And then the movie started to be very clumsy and blunt with its clues and explanations. Which all ends up with a “big reveal” where everything is spelled out rather than Eloise figuring more out herself. It never really became a cool mystery and the final reveal didn’t have that big of an impact. It tries to be psychological horror, but falls flat in that department compared to its Suspiria inspirations. I could also have lived without the clumsy collegedrama scenes.
