Dogtooth (2009)
While I was lukewarm to Poor Things, it was still interesting enough to make me have a look at more of Lanthimos’ films. I am still not entirely sure what the hell I just watched, but it is not something I will forget anytime soon.
Right from the start there is a sense of something being completely off. At first I thought I had bad subtitles because the sentences didn’t make sense, but of course it is deliberate. The film balances between being utterly absurd yet intriguing with a “what the hell is going on”-feeling from start to finish. It is very much a film that leaves one with more questions than answers, with the entire film sort of leading up to a conclusion or climax that just never comes. It is probably a film that is better watched with other people, because there are many things one can ponder over - because the film doesn’t give much explanation on the why on this sick human experiment.
