Burning (2018)

Every once in a while you watch a highly praised movie and it doesn’t connect at all with you. I have been questioning myself on what it is it I am missing that most other people see, but it is what is - not really something special for me.

Which is a shame because it has plenty of good building blocks and I want to like this, and I have a feeling I would have like this perhaps with a different director. There is nothing wrong with the actors here, all doing very well placed subtle nuanced performances - a style of acting I appreciate. I even liked the experimental soundtrack and while I didn’t find the cinematography as great as many other seems to praise - it was certainly not bad either. All the elements just didn’t added to much for me in the end. It hinges a lot of subtle ambiguity, which is fine, but I feel like it stands alone here. Can’t build everything around ambiguity alone, then the rest just falls flat and I became mostly disinterested in the mystery of Haemi and Jongsu’s jealousy.
