Scenes from a Marriage (1973)
I do wonder what kind of sin Liv Ullmann did to make her be emotionally abused in all of Bergman films. Along with Erland Josephson they convincingly play a couple that has been married for over a decade, and we get to see how they use that against each other. It is in many ways quite a depressive work, reminding me a good deal of Le Bonheur in its portrayal of a woman who is being taking for granted by a husband. One does wonder throughout all the six episodes what makes her keep coming back to a man that isn’t treating her very well, and there isn’t really given any clear answer because that is not how these things go. People form complex illogical relationships.
Thankfully my own marriage is a lot less dramatic and more boring than this, but even though there wasn’t much outright relatable or recognizable, it is still food for thought in many aspects on how not to end up at least. Like how he ended up not caring about his own daughters.
