The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
This movie follows a similar pattern like many other of Scorsese movie, with a long epic of a guys rise to fame and richness - with the inevitable personal downfall as well. I think I have a better idea know how Scorsese tells his stories, by just showing us all the depravity and horrible things people do mostly through their own eyes. They don’t see the hurtful and destructive consequences of their actions, so the movie won’t spend much time on that, which I guess is why Scorsese is often criticized for glorifying his amoral characters. However we as viewers can see how fucked up everything is, which makes for a different effect than a movie that focused more on the victims. I see this pattern in basically all his movies, most notably The Aviator, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas.
As a big fan of the movie Wall Street and the tv show Billions, I would have liked a bit more insight into how his sleazy money making scheme actually worked and what made it illegal, but of course that isn’t what Scorsese is interested in here and that is fine.
As for performances, I would support DiCaprio to have gotten an Oscar for this over The Revenant.
