Shutter Island (2010)
I did the right thing and knew practically nothing about this going in. I was pretty hooked from the start with the locked room mystery, the eerie atmosphere of the island and the interesting characters - especially those played by DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley.
Right from the start we get a sense that something is a bit off, and the various dreamy flashbacks gives a false of security in what is reality and what just takes places in Teddy’s mind. I found this to be a clever way of creating ambiguity while also giving certainty.
If I didn’t know it was Scorsese, I would guessed this to be a Nolan movie. And while the twist didn’t wow me, because we have come so used to them by now, I still think it was very well made and all the little pieces that didn’t make quite sense and annoyed me a bit all fell into place in the end. I am sure a rewatch will reveal more little clues and hints.
