Forbidden Planet (1956)

Science fiction movies from the 50s doesn’t have the best reputation but this deserves to be remembered and worth seeing today. Not just for it being an obvious influence on Star Trek, but for it being a well paced story with great set pieces, colorful characters and well crated plot with some philosophical musings. A few things are a tad dated, like how Anne Francis’ character is handled, but I was surprised at how well rounded and down to Earth (so to speak) the acting was. Walter Pidgeon is great as the highly intelligent arrogant recluse and Leslie Nielsen could easily have been the captain on a certain starship.
