Breaking the Waves (1996)

A very tragic story about a women who has nothing but love and good intentions, but doesn’t know how to control them or get proper guidance from her faith. Emily Watson physically embodies the notion of “can’t live without you” with how she looks and adores her husband, but in an unhealthy obsessive manner. It is a rather unsettling film in many ways, but Emily Watson’s presence is endearing with her sweetness and naiveté. Trier manages to evoke basically all conflicting emotions at once and it is not easy to get a proper hold of any of them.
